How a Household Works

A household is one set of finances with more than one person signed in to it. You are the Account Holder: it is your plan, and everyone you invite is a Member of your household. There is no copy and no syncing between two accounts. Everyone is looking at the same budgets, so a transaction a member categorises is categorised for you too.

  • Up to five members besides you.
  • Any Cadence plan can invite, including a free trial. Members do not need a plan of their own.
  • Each person keeps their own login, password, two-factor authentication and notification settings.
  • The household uses your timezone and currencies, so everyone agrees on what “this month” and “due in three days” mean.

Inviting Someone

  1. Open Settings → Household Members.
  2. In the Invite Someone card, type their email address.
  3. Under What They Can Do, pick View Only, Add & Edit or Custom. New invites start on View Only.
  4. Tap Send Invite.

They get an email with an Accept Invite button. The link works for 14 days, and only for the address you sent it to. If the email does not go out, Cadence shows you the link instead so you can copy it and send it yourself.

Invites that have not been accepted yet are listed under Waiting to Join. Tap the ⋮ menu beside one to Resend Invite (the new link replaces the old one) or Cancel Invite. An invite past its 14 days is marked Expired and no longer holds one of your five places.

Choosing What They Can Do

Every member can see everything in the household. What you choose is what they can change:

The three permission choices
ChoiceWhat the member can do
View OnlyLook at everything, change nothing
Add & EditAdd new items and change existing ones
CustomAny mix of Add, Edit, Archive, Delete and Change Account Syncing

The five switches under Custom mean:

  • Add: create new items.
  • Edit: change existing items.
  • Archive: archive and unarchive items.
  • Delete: delete and restore items.
  • Change Account Syncing: pause, hide or close linked accounts.

A member with every switch on is shown as Full Access. A few actions need two switches: creating a transaction rule or a timed budget redirect, and accepting a recurring bill suggestion, need both Add and Edit, and undoing an import needs both Delete and Edit.

To change what someone can do later, tap the ⋮ menu beside their name, choose Permissions, then Save. A member sees their own permissions on their row in the list.

Accepting an Invite

If you have been invited:

  1. Open the email and tap Accept Invite.
  2. Create a new Cadence Money account. The email address is filled in for you and cannot be changed, because the invite only works for that address.
  3. Confirm your email address. You land straight in the household.

There is no plan to pick and no setup wizard: the finances are already there.

Joining needs a brand-new account

An account that already has its own finances, or its own subscription, cannot join a household, and nothing is merged. If you already use Cadence Money on your own, ask for the invite to be sent to a different email address. You can also only be in one household at a time.

What Stays With the Account Holder

These stay with the account holder whatever a member’s permissions are:

  • The plan and billing: Change Plan and Manage Subscription.
  • Connecting, reconnecting and disconnecting banks.
  • Exporting the household’s transaction data.
  • Connecting an AI assistant. See Connect an AI Assistant.
  • The household’s timezone and currencies.

A member with Change Account Syncing can unsync a linked account and keep its transactions, but not the last synced account on a bank connection. Closing that one disconnects the bank, which only the account holder can do.

Notifications, Widgets and Who Changed What

Members get the household’s alerts, such as new transactions, bill reminders, credit-usage alerts and insights, each through their own notification settings. Reconnect prompts and security alerts go to the account holder only. Home-screen widgets work for members and show the household.

When more than one person is changing things, a record’s details show who added it and who last edited it, for example “Created by” one person and “Edited by” another. Someone who has since left the household shows as “a former member”, and a change made by a bank sync is not credited to anyone.

Leaving or Removing Someone

To leave a household, open Settings → Household Members and tap Leave Household. You stop seeing the finances right away, and you need a new invite to come back.

To remove a member, tap the ⋮ menu beside their name and choose Remove. They lose access right away, and their open app tells them they are no longer in the household.

Either way, the household’s finances stay with the account holder. The person who left keeps their own login, and their own Cadence Money account starts empty. Using it on their own needs a plan of their own.

If the Account Holder's Plan Ends

If the account holder’s plan lapses, members see Your Household Is Paused instead of the finances. Nothing is deleted, and everything comes back as soon as the account holder renews. There is nothing for a member to buy. From that screen a member can check again, leave the household, or sign out.

Deleting an Account

A member who deletes their account removes only their own login. The household’s finances stay with the account holder.

The account holder's deletion closes the household

If the account holder deletes their account, the household’s finances go with it, for everyone. Members keep their own logins but can no longer see any of it. Cadence names everyone affected on the delete screen, and each member is notified when the deletion is scheduled.
