Switching from PocketSmith
Move your PocketSmith transactions into Cadence Money.
Updated
Before You Start
- Note your forecasts and budgets. Calendar budgets, scenarios and forecasts live only inside PocketSmith. Screenshots of the ones you rely on are enough.
- Check each account’s currency. If you hold accounts in more than one currency, turn the extra ones on in Cadence Money first, under Settings → Currencies, so each account can keep its own.
- Start your Cadence Money trial. Every plan includes a 14-day trial and a card is required to start it. You do not need to connect a bank to import a file.
Exporting From PocketSmith
On the PocketSmith website, open Transactions, search or filter to one account, and choose Export. Pick CSV rather than Excel, since the import wizard reads CSV only. Repeat for each account you want to bring across.
Take everything rather than a date range - history is the one part of this move that is hard to recreate later.
Importing Into Cadence Money
The wizard is six steps and tells you which one you are on at the top - Step 1 of 6 through Step 6 of 6. Nothing is written to your account until the last one, so backing out part-way through is safe.
- Upload. Open the + menu, choose Import Transactions, pick Budget App, then drop the file in.
- Account. Say which account these transactions belong to. The dropdown lists the accounts you keep by hand, plus Create a new account at the top, where you also set the account’s currency.
- Mapping. Cadence Money suggests a column for each field from the header names. Check the date, the merchant and the amount, and point the category, notes and currency at PocketSmith’s columns if you want them.
- Review. Check the parsed dates, amounts and merchant names. You can correct a category here, and each correction teaches Cadence Money for next time.
- Duplicates. The file is compared against what the account already holds, before anything is written.
- Confirm. A summary of what is about to land, and the button that writes it.
Check the signs on the Review step
If spending shows as income on the Review step, go back to the upload step and pick Credit Card instead, which flips the signs. Nothing is written until the last step, so this costs you nothing.
What Comes Across
- Dates, merchant names and amounts, once the mapping is confirmed.
- Your categories, if you map that column. Cadence Money categorises everything anyway, so a file without them costs you nothing.
- Notes and a currency column, if you map them. Unmapped columns are ignored.
- Your history in full, as far back as your files go.
What Does Not Come Across
- Budgets, forecasts and scenarios. These are settings rather than data, and no transaction export carries them.
- Category rules. Rebuild the ones you rely on as Transaction Rules.
- Attachments. Receipts stay in PocketSmith.
- Historical account balances. You set a balance once per account and Cadence Money carries it forward from there.
- Your PocketSmith subscription. Cancel it with PocketSmith - starting with Cadence Money does not end it.
After the Import
- Create your budgets. Tap the + button and choose Budget, name it, pick Monthly or Annual, set the amount, and link the spending categories that feed it. Turn on rollover where an underspent month should carry forward.
- Set up your goals. Savings you tracked with rollover budgets in PocketSmith can be Goals of their own here. See Goals.
- Check the import. Settings → Imports lists every file you have brought in. From there you can move one to a different account, or undo it entirely.
- Decide how future months arrive. Keep importing a CSV when it suits you, or connect the bank on the Cadence+ and Premium plans and let new transactions arrive on their own - in Canada as well as the USA.
