Switching from Wealthica

Set up your accounts and holdings in Cadence Money, and bring in your bank history.

Updated

Before You Start

  1. List your accounts and their types. Note which are TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP or RDSP, and each one’s currency.
  2. Save the reports you want to keep. Capital gains, income and performance reports stay in Wealthica, so export or print the ones you need, for tax time especially.
  3. Start your Cadence Money trial. Every plan includes a 14-day trial and a card is required to start it.

Setting Up Your Accounts

On the Cadence+ and Premium plans, connect your banks and brokerages and the accounts arrive on their own. On any plan you can add an account by hand instead and keep its balance up to date yourself. Either way, give each registered account its real type, so a TFSA is a TFSA rather than a generic investment account.

Contribution room is a goal

Track it with a Contribution Room goal per account, with the year’s limit as its target. The TFSA Contribution Room and RRSP Contribution Room presets start one - see Contribution Room.

Bringing In Your Holdings

  • Synced from your brokerage. From the + menu choose Connect Investments. This is a connection of its own, separate from the bank link, and brings the positions you hold rather than the trades. See Synced Investments.
  • Entered by hand. From the + menu choose Holding and enter the shares and what you paid. See Holdings & Investments.

Importing Past Bank Transactions

The everyday spending history that budgets are built on comes most reliably from your bank. Download a CSV for each chequing account and credit card, taking the widest date range on offer. PDF, Excel and OFX files are not read by the import wizard.

  1. Upload. Open the + menu, choose Import Transactions, pick Bank Statement for a chequing export or Credit Card for a card export, which flips the signs so charges read as spending.
  2. Account. Pick the account the file belongs to, or Create a new account.
  3. Mapping. Check the date, description and amount columns Cadence Money suggests.
  4. Review. Check the parsed rows, correcting any category as you go.
  5. Duplicates. The file is compared against what the account already holds, before anything is written.
  6. Confirm. A summary of what is about to land, and the button that writes it.

What Does Not Come Across

  • Your investment history and reports. Trades, dividends, capital gains and performance stay in Wealthica.
  • Your net worth history. Cadence Money’s chart starts from the values you record here.
  • Budgets and transaction rules. Set up the ones you still want as Budgets and Transaction Rules.
  • Your Wealthica subscription. Cancel it with Wealthica - starting with Cadence Money does not end it.

After the Move

  1. Create your budgets. Tap the + button and choose Budget, name it, pick Monthly or Annual, set the amount, and link the spending categories that feed it.
  2. Add your bills and income. They feed the cash flow view of what is coming up. See Cash Flow.
  3. Check the import. Settings → Imports lists every file you have brought in. From there you can move one to a different account, or undo it entirely.
