Switching from Quicken

Move your Quicken Simplifi or Quicken Classic history into Cadence Money.

Updated

Before You Start

  1. Export before you cancel. Simplifi does not let you view your data without an active subscription, so take the file while you still can.
  2. Write down your budget. Your spending plan or category budgets live only inside Quicken. A screenshot is enough.
  3. List the accounts you actually want. Cadence Money imports one file per account, so this tells you how many files to make.
  4. Start your Cadence Money trial. Every plan includes a 14-day trial and a card is required to start it. You do not need to connect a bank to import a file.

Exporting From Quicken Simplifi

Simplifi exports from its web app only, not the phone app. Open Transactions, use the menu beside the filter, and choose the CSV export. It exports whatever the Transactions view is showing, so filter it to one account and the widest date range first, and repeat for each account.

Split transactions are not included by default, so check any you rely on after the import.

Exporting From Quicken Classic

  • On a Mac. Open the account’s register, then choose File → Export → Register Transactions to CSV File. Do this once per account.
  • On Windows. Classic exports QIF rather than CSV, and the import wizard reads CSV only. Download a CSV from your bank for each account instead (below).

Your data file stays where it is

Quicken Classic keeps your history in a data file on your computer. Moving to Cadence Money does not change or delete it, so it remains your archive for anything that does not come across.

Getting a CSV From Your Bank

  • Pick CSV if you are offered a choice. PDF, Excel and OFX files are not read by the import wizard.
  • Take the widest date range on offer. History is the one part of this move that is hard to recreate later.
  • One file per account, and download credit cards separately: cards print charges and payments the opposite way round from a chequing export.

Importing Into Cadence Money

The wizard is six steps and tells you which one you are on at the top - Step 1 of 6 through Step 6 of 6. Nothing is written to your account until the last one, so backing out part-way through is safe.

  1. Upload. Open the + menu, choose Import Transactions, then pick Budget App for a Quicken file, Bank Statement for a chequing export, or Credit Card for a card export, which flips the signs so charges read as spending.
  2. Account. Say which account these transactions belong to. The dropdown lists the accounts you keep by hand, plus Create a new account at the top. A TFSA, RRSP or FHSA is an account type of its own here.
  3. Mapping. Cadence Money suggests a column for each field from the header names. Check the date, the payee and the amount, and point the category at Quicken’s category column if you want it.
  4. Review. Check the parsed dates, amounts and payee names. You can correct a category here, and each correction teaches Cadence Money for next time.
  5. Duplicates. The file is compared against what the account already holds, before anything is written.
  6. Confirm. A summary of what is about to land, and the button that writes it.

Check the signs on the Review step

If spending shows as income on the Review step, go back to the upload step and switch the file type, which flips the signs. Nothing is written until the last step, so this costs you nothing.

What Comes Across

  • Dates, payees and amounts, once the mapping is confirmed.
  • Quicken’s categories, if you map that column. Cadence Money categorises everything anyway, so a file without them costs you nothing.
  • Notes and anything else you point at on the mapping step. Unmapped columns are ignored.
  • Your history in full, as far back as your files go.

What Does Not Come Across

  • Your spending plan or budgets. These are settings rather than data, and no export carries them.
  • Investment lots and cost basis. Enter holdings by hand, or sync them from your brokerage on the Cadence+ and Premium plans.
  • Savings goals, reminders and rules. Set up the ones you still want as Goals, bills and Transaction Rules.
  • Historical account balances. You set a balance once per account and Cadence Money carries it forward from there.
  • Your Quicken subscription. Cancel it with Quicken - starting with Cadence Money does not end it.

After the Import

  1. Create your budgets. Tap the + button and choose Budget, name it, pick Monthly or Annual, set the amount, and link the spending categories that feed it.
  2. Add your holdings. Enter the stocks, ETFs and funds you hold, or connect the brokerage. See Holdings & Investments.
  3. Check the import. Settings → Imports lists every file you have brought in. From there you can move one to a different account, or undo it entirely.
  4. Decide how future months arrive. Keep importing a CSV when it suits you, or connect the bank on the Cadence+ and Premium plans and let new transactions arrive on their own - in Canada as well as the USA.
