Multi-Currency
Hold accounts and assets in different currencies and see your totals in a single primary currency.
Turning on Multi-Currency
Multi-currency lives in Settings, under the Currencies section. There is no single on/off switch — multi-currency turns on the moment you add a second currency to your supported list:
- Open Settings and find the Currencies section.
- Under Supported Currencies, use the Add currency dropdown to add another currency.
- Currency pickers now appear on your accounts, assets, and transactions so you can record each one in its own currency.
Cadence currently supports three currencies: Canadian Dollar (CAD), US Dollar (USD), and British Pound (GBP).
Primary vs Supported Currencies
The Currencies section has two settings that do different jobs:
- Primary Currency— The currency used for display and totals. Everything you see across the app, including net worth and budget totals, is shown in your primary currency.
- Supported Currencies— The set of currencies you are allowed to record individual items in. Add the ones you actually use; you can remove any except your primary.
Changing your primary currency recalculates every total so your accounts, assets, budgets, goals, and net worth are all shown in the new currency.
Recording Items in Another Currency
Once you have more than one supported currency, an inline currency picker appears wherever you enter an amount. You can hold each of these in its own currency:
- Bank and investment accounts.
- Manual assets and vehicles.
- Crypto and manual holdings.
- Real estate and liabilities.
- Transactions and income sources.
Each item keeps its own currency, and Cadence converts it into your primary currency whenever it rolls up into a total.
How Conversion Works
Cadence converts amounts using daily exchange rates published by the Bank of Canada. Because these rates update once per business day, your converted totals reflect the most recent published rate rather than live, intraday market prices — a foreign-currency balance will not tick up and down with the market throughout the day.
If Cadence cannot reach the latest rates for a moment, it falls back to a recent approximate rate so your totals still load, then updates them once live rates are available. This means multi-currency totals are close estimates, not exact to-the-cent conversions.
Good to Know
- With only one supported currency, no currency pickers appear and every amount is treated as your primary currency — there is nothing to convert.
- An item saved without a currency is treated as Canadian Dollars.
- Each budget tracks a single currency; spending recorded in another currency is converted before it counts toward that budget.
- Rounding amounts to the nearest dollar is a separate Appearance setting and has nothing to do with currency conversion. See the Settings article for more.
